A Sound Vibration Awakening
Alexander Tuttle, Certified in Psychoacoustics and Sound Healing
Everyone knows the power of the right song at the right time. Music can move us to tears; lift us up; remind us of past experiences, past relationships, our dreams, our aspirations, our short comings, and many other reflections. In reflecting, we realize when we are in a certain mood we tend to select music either to enhance or shift our state of being. Some times we are very aware of this process. Other times, we may change a song or sound just because we don’t like what it is doing to us from many different aspects. By the way, from a therapeutic perspective these unprefered sounds can be useful as well, so let's not throw them out just yet. If we accept music is sound, sound is frequency, frequency is vibration, and every part of our physical plane consists of vibration - especially our human body - we can agree sound is not only heard through our ears but through every cell in our body. Our culture is so visually over-stimulated we often neglect to credit the impact of auditory stimuli. Maybe this is why sound has been the most neglected of all healing tools.
Music/sound effects us at these deep levels not only emotionally but physically, spiritually, energetically, and as we have said cellularly, due in part to Entrainment, Resonance, and Intention. Entrainment is the process where by an external rhythm (tempo) of a stronger pulse speeds up or slows down that of a weaker pulse, for example, our heart rate, nervous system, and brainwave states. Sonic Entrainment can transform negative, repressed emotions into a state of subjective equilibrium that has immediate effects on our entire being. In this state we can restore harmony within ourselves and our energy fields, and become more harmonious with the Uni-verse meaning (one song) and awaken our spiritual consciousness.
To resonate is to resound. Something external sets something else in motion, or changes its vibratory rate (in sync or out of sync, good or bad vibes from others or a situation). Even if it is the lyrics of a song that moves you when you hear it, it is the Pitch (group of frequencies) of the singer's voice (how it resonates with you), the Rhythm in which it is projected (entrainment), as well as the Intent behind the words, not just the meanings, that calls to you.
Intention is the most important element in facilitating healing with sound or any other modality. It is what are you looking to get out of the session - overall well-being; more patience; compassion; help with physical, emotional, spiritual issues; or whatever healing it is time for. This subject is very important for both the client and the facilitator, not just to be mentioned, but to be taken to the deepest of levels. We are our own Healers. This responsibility must be taken, studied, absorbed, integrated, and accepted. Look outward only for facilitation. While absorbing Healing sounds oneself or working with sound in a therapeutic setting clear intention is key.
While looking at the ways sound can assist us we also should realize how the sounds of our industrial age have polluted our sound scape. We are immersed in these sounds daily and absorb immeasurable amounts of frequencies that create disharmony and stress. Nature sounds which helped keep our ancestors in balance keep getting pushed further and further into the background, or don’t exist at all in some areas. These Sounds, these Frequencies, are calling for us to respond. There are many ways to receive these frequencies and this is where a Sound Facilitator can assist in a Sound Session.
Some tools for self-applicable tuning are Quartz Crystal bowls, Tibetan Metal Bowls, various Stringed Instruments (specially tuned), Tuning Forks, Gongs, Drums, and various Earth Instruments to name a few, but the most powerful instrument for oneself is the Human Voice. Singing is a wonderful gift many people share, however you don’t have to be able to sing to be effective on yourself or others. Vocal Toning (using elongated sounds with a single exhalation such as AAAHHH, EEEE, OOOO, OM, MMMMM) can be very effective in all the categories we have discussed. If you are doing this for yourself, don’t be overly concerned about the sound coming out as good or bad. These are your sounds and they are useful to you. Even a cracking of the voice is useful as part of releasing energy so just keep going. Feel free to experiment with different pitches and note where you feel it resonate in your body. Doing this daily or from time to time can have tremendous effects in many different areas of our being. Break down those barriers society has restricted you with, just find a safe place, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, open your mouth, and let the sound fall out. Do this for as long or short as you want and allow the shifts to happen. Very relaxing, and remember your Intent. Chanting, whistling, humming, and conscience speaking (focusing on the vibration in your body while you’re speaking) are other useful methods of tuning oneself.
It’s not a matter of completely changing one’s life or surroundings, but equipping one’s self for day-to-day activities. Remember, it takes gradual shifts over time to re-balance what it has taken years of life experiences to unbalance. Balanced sound/music/frequencies is the platform for profound rest and profound rest is the platform for true restoration. If you research healing modalities of most cultures both present and past, somewhere you will find the use of sound. We are at a time in space where, whether you accept it from a scientific point of view or an intuitive point of view, the question is not if sound is powerful, but how powerful you will allow it to be.
A simple assistance
It turns pleasurable
A voice recognizable
Tones Immeasurable
A heart on the sleeve
It receives, it’s medicinal
Allowance, a sinking
Awakening, it’s spiritual
