Aromatherapy for Stress
Cynthia J. Loving, Clinical Aromatherapist
We are hearing complaints about feeling tired, stressed, and irritable, out of sorts with increased colds and/or allergic responses. One woman described it as a sense of not really being sick ... just not well. This is commonly known as malaise a vague feeling of unease, illness, or depression. Just in case misery loves company...know you are not alone. These feelings may be brought on by a “germ” being passed around, or the change of seasons, or the challenging economic times, or the rancor that seems so prevalent. It really doesnt matter - all of these stress our bodies, minds, and spirits. There is no pill to take, no shot to get - what are we to do?
If you are feeling tired due to the inability to go to sleep, may we suggest using Sandman’s Helper, a blend of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Marjoram (Origanum marjorana). Apply 1-2 drops of this blend to the top of your sheet, on your pajama top, or on your pillow and breathe. If you wake in the middle of the night, repeat the above - have sweet dreams.
Most of the people I talk to say they are more mentally exhausted than physically. If this seems a more likely fit for you I suggest: turning off the “news” - putting aside the newspapers or news magazines, limit your time on the computer, watch shows that make you laugh or elevate your mood, enjoy a walk in nature, focus on the things that mean the most to you and how good they make you feel, listen to your favorite music. This time will pass. Allow yourself to kick back, enjoy, and strengthen yourself on all levels. And, use your essential oils to support you and keep you on track. Some of these to choose from or combine are: Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) calm encouragement; Clove bud (Eugenia caryophyllata) warm the spirits; Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) joy; Peru balsam (Myroxylon pereirae) open the mind and heart; Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) strength and support; Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) recognition of self beauty; and .......
